Yes Man: The Art of Saying Yes and No in a World of Complete Sentences

“A ‘yes’ to the right opportunity can rewrite your entire story.”

Do you remember Yes Man? The Jim Carrey movie where he plays Carl, a guy stuck in a rut of constant “no.”

He was in a rut, then goes to a self-help seminar and decides to say yes to everything. Suddenly, his world opens up, he learns to play guitar, takes flying lessons, and even finds love. The premise is simple yet profound—saying “yes” can transform your life.

There’s a big trend right now that’s basically the antithesis of that movie. You see it all over social media and I’ve even written about it, “No is a complete sentence.” You seen the posts. The reminders to protect your mental health, set boundaries, and stop being a doormat for other people’s needs. And YES, yes, yes—I agree with this 100%.

I’ve been that person. The one who said “yes” to everything because I thought I had to. Because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Because I thought my worth was tied to how much I could do for others. And guess what? I burned out. Hard. I spent years unlearning the belief that saying “no” was selfish and instead learned how to prioritize myself. It was liberating, empowering, and honestly, life-saving.

But here’s the catch, while learning to say “no” is very important, don’t let it become a crutch. If you’re not careful, you can get so good at saying no that you close the door to opportunities that could change your life. Saying no can keep you safe, but saying yes? Saying yes can push you, challenge you, and bring you experiences you never dreamed of.

The Balance Between No and Yes

Not every “yes” leads to burnout, just like not every “no” is a win for your mental health. Sometimes, saying yes is the bravest thing you can do. It’s terrifying. It’s uncomfortable. It’s the last thing you want to do because it requires vulnerability. But it’s also where the magic can happen.

If I hadn’t said yes to uncomfortable, scary opportunities, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t have started my business, written a book, or hosted events for hundreds of people. I wouldn’t have grown into someone who can confidently walk into a room full of strangers, stand on a stage, and share my story. Every one of those moments started with a single yes.

Was it easy? Hell no. Was I scared? Hell yes! But here’s what I’ve learned, fear is often just a sign that you’re about to do something meaningful.

When to Say Yes (and No)

I’m not saying you should throw caution to the wind and say yes to everything like Jim Carrey’s character. Saying yes to things that harm your mental health, drain your energy, or compromise your values is a no-go. But saying yes to things that scare you, excite you, or stretch you in ways you didn’t know were possible? It can open doors you never expected.

Here’s how to figure out the difference:

  1. Does this align with my values? If it doesn’t, it’s an easy no. If it does, consider the potential growth.

  2. Will this help me grow? If the answer is yes, even if it’s terrifying, lean in. Growth often lives on the other side of fear.

  3. Am I saying no out of fear or necessity? Sometimes we say no to protect ourselves, which is valid. But other times, we say no because it’s easier than facing discomfort. Be honest with yourself.

Saying Yes Changed My Life

There’s a moment I think about often, the day I said yes to running a marathon. I wasn’t a runner. I had every reason to say no—it was hard, it was out of my comfort zone, and I was scared of failing. But I said yes, and that decision didn’t just change my fitness level, it changed how I saw myself. I became someone who could tackle hard things.

It’s the same with starting my business. I said yes to opportunities that scared me: speaking gigs, coaching people who intimidated me, putting myself out there even when I felt unprepared. Each yes built my confidence, expanded my network, and created momentum.

The thing is, saying yes isn’t just about achieving big milestones. It’s about letting life surprise you. It’s about saying yes to that random networking event where you meet someone who changes your trajectory. Or saying yes to a trip that turns out to be the exact reset you needed. Or saying yes to trying something new—even if you suck at it—just because it’s fun.

Your Life is Waiting

Here’s the truth, life isn’t going to hand you opportunities on a silver platter while you sit safely behind your perfectly crafted boundaries. Sometimes, you have to stick your neck out and say yes. You have to risk looking foolish, failing, or being uncomfortable.

Saying no is powerful. It’s necessary. But don’t forget to say yes, too. Because the best things in life? They can come from a no, a yes.
