Stop Getting In Your Own Way!

“Recognize your inner critic: Name it, shame it, and then move on.”

We are often our own greatest adversaries, especially when it comes to chasing our dreams or tackling large projects.

I’m not speaking hypothetically, I’m speaking from personal experience. When I began writing my first book, despite having two years of blogging experience, I was mired in self-doubt. Thoughts like “I’m not a real writer,” “Self-publishing isn’t legitimate,” or “There are better books out there” frequently haunted me. It was a relentless assault of self-imposed barriers.

But, I got out of my own way, finished the damn thing and now thousands of book sales later, I am glad that I pushed past those doubts. Let me share how I stopped getting in my own way, and how you can do the same.

You Are Your Own Worst Enemy

It sounds harsh, but it’s true. Doubt can be more fantastical than unicorns because it’s rooted in fear. Fear of failure, fear of success, and fear of the unknown—all of these fears are just different masks worn by the same beast. They manifest as seemingly logical excuses: “I’m not ready yet,” “I need more experience,” “What if I mess up?” It’s all fear, cunningly disguised, holding us back from potential achievements.

The Impostor Within

Ever felt like a fraud? That’s impostor syndrome, making you doubt every achievement and downplay every success. It’s a common trap, one that whispers you’re always one mistake away from being exposed. But here’s the truth: everyone who has ever achieved anything significant started off feeling uncertain and unworthy.

Strategies to Overcome Self-Doubt

  • Recognize Your Inner Critic: Identify that negative inner voice. Once you understand that it’s fear masquerading as practicality, you can begin to dismiss it.

  • Challenge Your Doubts: Whenever a self-doubt creeps in, scrutinize it. Ask yourself, “Is this thought based on fact or just my fear?” This reflection can help dismantle unfounded fears.

  • Embrace Failure: Viewing failure as a teacher rather than a tormentor changes everything. Each setback teaches a valuable lesson, propelling you toward success.

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every small achievement is a step forward. Celebrating these can build momentum and reinforce your path forward.

  • Surround Yourself with Positivity: Cultivate relationships with people who encourage and believe in you. Their support can be a powerful antidote to self-doubt.

Stop getting in your own way. Stop letting fear shape your decisions. Stop underestimating your abilities and start embracing your potential.

You are capable of remarkable things—things far greater than you imagine. But first, you must step aside and let yourself move forward.

This isn’t just about selling books or completing projects; it’s about realizing that the only significant obstacles in our paths are often the ones we place ourselves. So, move out of your way, and watch as doors open and opportunities unfold.
