Everything in the Dark Comes to Light

“The things we hide don’t protect us; they hold us hostage.
Freedom starts the moment we’re brave enough to
bring them into the light.”

Alright, confession time, I once used to stash chocolate in my desk drawer at work. I told myself it was for a “pick-me-up” after a long meeting, but, really, it was my little secret indulgence. I didn’t even realize it at the time, but that small, seemingly harmless habit was a window into something deeper I’d been hiding from myself. I’d told myself I was fine with how things were, but those little stashes were saying something else. They weren’t just candy—they were a signal that I was looking for comfort in places I’d rather not admit. It’s funny how even the smallest things in the dark eventually come to light.

Now, maybe it’s not chocolate for you, but let’s be real—what are you tucking away? We all have things that we hide, both from ourselves and from others. Sometimes it’s a hard truth about a relationship that we don’t want to face. Maybe it’s a habit or a mindset we can’t seem to shake, or even just a version of ourselves we’re not quite ready to let go of. But here’s the thing, whatever you’re keeping in the dark? Eventually, it’s going to find a way out.

The truth isn’t just about lies. It’s about anything you’re avoiding or sweeping under the rug. When you push things down, thinking you can keep them hidden forever, they end up controlling you. They create stress, impact your decisions, and keep you from living fully. The truth, no matter how messy or inconvenient, is like a beacon calling you toward growth, even when you don’t want to go there.

1. Your Mind Doesn’t Do Well With ‘Someday’

Anytime we put off facing something uncomfortable, we’re giving away power. “Someday, I’ll deal with this” becomes “I’m actively letting this dictate my life today.” But what if, instead of burying it, we confronted it head-on? What if we peeled back the layers, looked at the hard truths, and faced the reality of who we are and where we’re headed? Yes, it can be uncomfortable as hell. But it’s only when we expose the shadows that we can stop letting them control us.

2. Hiding Creates a False Version of Yourself

The things we try to keep hidden don’t stay hidden—they distort who we are. We start to live in ways that feel misaligned with who we want to be. We keep people at a distance. We avoid decisions. We make excuses. All in the name of protecting something that’s probably way smaller and way less dramatic than we think. The more we can let go of what’s buried, the more aligned, empowered, and honest we become.

3. The Things We Avoid Tend to Be What We Need Most

We often hide the truths that have the most power to transform us. Maybe it’s fear of failure, self-doubt, or a lingering hurt we never dealt with. But every time we avoid those things, we miss the chance to grow. It’s like not opening a letter because you’re afraid of the message, even though it could hold exactly what you need. The discomfort we feel is a signal that there’s potential here—a path to something better, if we have the guts to explore it.

4. Coming Clean is the Fastest Route to Freedom

When we face what we’re hiding, it’s like finally exhaling after holding our breath for too long. There’s relief, clarity, and a feeling of freedom that can’t be replicated by keeping things in the dark. Whatever we’re avoiding, however small or large, has a way of creating tension until it’s out in the open. And the beauty of finally confronting it? You realize you’ve been the one holding the key to your own peace this whole time.

5. Life’s Too Short to Be a Prisoner of Your Own Secrets

Here’s the real kicker: the things we avoid are often trivial once we look them in the eye. We give them so much power when they’re hidden in the dark, but when they come to light, we see them for what they are—opportunities to grow, change, and move forward. Life is too short to carry around the weight of things we don’t need. It’s far more liberating to release what no longer serves us and walk forward without the baggage.

So, maybe it’s time to throw open those proverbial closet doors and let in some light. Not just for the big, dramatic truths but also for the small things. We’ve all got our own version of the “chocolate stash.” Whatever yours is, own it. Face it. Make peace with it.

Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be able to laugh about it—and savor a piece of chocolate without the need to hide it away.
