“Celebrate your small successes,
build that momentum”

In my previous life as a non-profit director, one of the largest events my team organized grossed the organization over $1 million the year of our centennial celebration. That became the expectation for years to come.
The following year, we did not gross $1 million. However, our expenses decreased, the number of sponsorships increased, the in-kind donations doubled, our net revenue was higher, the number of participants grew and the feedback from the event was amazing.
After the event, my supervisor at the time gave us an unenthusiastic KUDOS, a metaphorical pat on the back, and quickly scheduled a follow up meeting to start discussing why our gross revenue was not $1 million, overlooking the other successes we had.
We didn’t even have time to raise a glass and celebrate our success before we were already looking ahead to the next year.
How many times can you recall something like that has happened in your life?
Whether it be in your work life or in your personal life, have you been guilty of not celebrating the wins in your life because you were always looking at what could have been better, more impressive, or you were looking ahead to the next thing?
Do more! Work more! Make more money! Lose more weight!
Have you ever:
- Had weight loss goals before and not celebrated a 2-pound loss because you think it should have been 4?
- Had milestones to hit in a job you were so focused on you didn’t celebrate the other wins you achieved during that time?
- Ran a 5K for the first time but didn’t celebrate it because you are working towards a 10K?
- Had a challenging time in your life when you finally went a month without crying, but then beat yourself up because you were triggered and cried?
I am guilty!
Most recently I have been beating myself up because I haven’t achieved certain goals by a specific date and I’ve forgotten to celebrate the SHIT TON that I have accomplished in the past 3 years because I’ve been so busy looking ahead.
It’s easy to get caught up in the vicious cycle of MORE MORE MORE!
“Success is a series of small wins”
Recognizing and celebrating small successes boosts your self-esteem. Acknowledging small wins ignites the part of your brain that releases chemicals that give you a feeling of joy and pride, and motivates you to keep moving forward!
Somewhere along the way, we forgot the importance of celebrating our small successes, which actually are big successes!
The key is accepting that your end goals aren’t going to happen overnight, in the next week or maybe even the next year, and that is okay.
Celebrating small wins can make complex goals, that can seem overwhelming, more manageable.
“Celebrate your small wins, only you know how
far you have come”
Make a list of things that you have accomplished in the past year. Did you celebrate any of them? I challenge you to put together a list of fun and creative ways to celebrate your successes, no matter how “small”.
- Text or call a friend
- Treat yourself (gift, dinner, etc.)
- Go on a hike
- Take a personal day
- Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself YOU’RE AWESOME!
- Dance
- Fill in the blank _______
The next time you accomplish something you are proud of, stop and celebrate it!
Remember, You Got This!
XOXO
