“The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
It’s reported that about 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February. This high failure rate can be attributed to several factors, such as setting unrealistic goals, lack of a support system, insufficient self-discipline, and not tracking progress effectively.
Five years ago, following my divorce, I shifted my focus from typical New Year’s resolutions – losing weight, eating healthier, saving money – to a more flexible approach. This change was prompted by a realization that the traditional goals I set each year weren’t truly serving me or my personal growth. So, I embraced the concept of choosing a “word of the year.”
The beauty of choosing a word of the year lies in its flexibility and personal significance. It serves as a guide in a more organic and less rigid way than typical resolutions. Whether your focus is on fostering creativity, building resilience, or nurturing joy, a word of the year can be a powerful tool in shaping your experiences and outlook.
Why Choose a Word of the Year?
A word of the year is more than just a phrase; it’s a compass for your upcoming year. By selecting a word that resonates with your aspirations and values, you set a tone for your personal journey over the next twelve months. This method offers numerous benefits, such as:
Guiding Personal Growth: Your chosen word acts as a constant reminder of your aspirations, helping to steer your decisions and actions.
Enhancing Focus and Motivation: It keeps you aligned with your core intentions, ensuring that you remain motivated and on track.
Offering Flexibility: Unlike rigid resolutions, a word of the year can adapt to changing circumstances, allowing for a more fluid and forgiving approach to personal development.
How to Choose Your Word for the Year
Selecting your word requires reflection and a clear vision of what you want to cultivate in your life.
✅Reflect: Consider the highs and lows of the past year. What did you learn? What do you wish to carry forward or leave behind?
✅Brainstorm: List words that resonate with your desired focus for the year. These could range from “empowerment” to “serenity,” depending on what speaks to you.
✅Narrow it Down: Look at the significance of each word. How do they align with your goals and values? Choose a word that genuinely resonates with you.
✅Alignment: Be sure your word reflects your aspirations and is in alignment with the chapter of your life.
